Ebook About Academy of Parish Clergy - 2018 Top Ten List"Come away and rest awhile."Jesus invites us to be with him, offering our full and undivided attention to him. When we choose retreat, we make a generous investment in our friendship with Christ. We are not always generous with ourselves where God is concerned. Many of us have tried to incorporate regular times of solitude and silence into the rhythm of our ordinary lives, which may mean that we give God twenty minutes here and half an hour there. And there’s no question we are better for it! But we need more. Indeed, we long for more.In these pages Transforming Center founder and seasoned spiritual director Ruth Haley Barton gently leads us into retreat as a key practice that opens us to God. Based on her own practice and her experience leading hundreds of retreats for others, she will guide you in a very personal exploration of seven specific invitations contained within the general invitation to retreat. You will discover how to say yes to God's winsome invitation to greater freedom and surrender. There has never been a time when the invitation to retreat is so radical and so relevant, so needed and so welcome. It is not a luxury, but a necessity of the spiritual life.Book Invitation to Retreat: The Gift and Necessity of Time Away with God (Transforming Resources) Review :
A group of us went on a retreat with the book Invitation to Retreat. The invitations are winsome and powerful. Chapter Ten, Finding Spiritual Freedom, was the invitation for me (Clare.)In Chapter Ten, Ruth writes, "While on retreat, I was taken by surprise when a spiritual director raised the issue of spiritual freedom as I talked about the unworkable nature of my life and its demands." I stopped right there. These words had me drop in the depths of my soul and feel my unfreedom.Letting go of work and receiving "the gift and necessity of time away with God" (the book's subtitle) has saved my life more than once.I confess that when my life is on autopilot, I am the performance-oriented achiever type (Three on the Enneagram, Chapter Seven.) My need to pay attention to that reality, that compulsion, truly an addiction, began about fifteen years ago at the Transforming Center. I was unaware that my need for approval and affection was driving my late night, early morning, work till I drop days. Putting my head on the pillow with Ruth's invitation (Chapter Two) to "Just Flop Down" helped recover my life. You'd think that after years of practicing the invitation to retreat I wouldn't be surprised to discover unfreedom on retreat, but I am, and I'm grateful.Last night, while in my own bedroom, I read Chapter Eleven "Remember the Signs." I looked past my book, journal, and candle, and saw my grandsons tennis shoes and other things that were out of order. Finding retreat space in my “ordinary” life helped me remember the signs I received while on retreat. I didn't pick up the shoes or move into work mode. I stayed with the shoes, felt the gratitude and invitations in my real, very messy, never finished life. Once again, Ruth’s writing faithfully guides my soul into rest and action.Whether you’ve been a person practicing retreat for years or brand new to the idea, this book is a treasure trove both on retreat and in your ordinary messy life. Ruth Haley Barton has done it again! This book is another practical treatment of a vital topic in our changing world, retreat. Ruth, in her latest "invitation" calls us to regularly schedule time to spend with God. In this particular reflection, she outlines the value of taking time to be "on retreat" as a way of cultivating one's relationship with Christ. From Ruth's opening chapter she makes the argument that this vital practice gives us the opportunity to leave the struggles in order to allow God to realize his presence in our lives and to restore our souls. Ruth, from the opening encouragement offers specific encouragement on how to go about preparing for and spending time on retreat. Between the questions and practices, this book becomes a vital pastoral resource for those who guide followers of Jesus on retreat. It is well worth the investment for those who are tired, who feel overwhelmed, or who have lost sight of God and need a directed time of renewal. This book is an accessible invitation for all.I received this book as a part of a launch team and offer my review as a part fo receiving this book before publication.
